About Me

Colleen Ward

One of the pieces of writing I'm most proud of is a poem I wrote when I was eleven. I remember coming home from school one afternoon, sitting at the kitchen table, and just writing. I don't know exactly where those words came from, but they came fast and furiously. I knew, even then, it was pretty good. I showed my mum, and she looked at me with this fierce certainty only mothers seem to have. "You are a writer," she said — as if it was the simplest, most obvious truth in the world.

As I got older, I made a practical decision (or so I thought) and earned myself a Bachelor of Economics. A severe wrong turn, if I'm honest. Soon after, I veered toward TV and radio, spending nearly thirty years shaping stories — scripting voiceovers, writing for presenters, and crafting episodes across Australian television.

I told stories every day. I just wasn’t brave enough to call myself a writer. Mum never stopped calling me one though. Even when I doubted, she didn't. Now, as she dances among the stars, I feel her encouragement more than ever.

Yep, I'm finally catching up to that eleven-year-old girl who knew writing wasn't just something she could do — it was something she was meant to do.
